Pigmentation has many causes from ageing, hormonal imbalances, genetics, and even some types of medications, but the main cause we see in our part of the world for pigmentation is sun exposure.
You’re not alone if you are battling with pigmented skin (trust us we have all fallen victim), but we don’t just come to share war stories over our skin’s complexion, we have a solution!
Treating Pigmentation
Say goodbye to dark spots and discolouration with our science based formulations designed to mimic your natural skin rejuvenation cycle. Feeding your skin the exact concentrations it needs creates a skincare system that we guarantee will help enhance your skin and make you glow from the inside out with confidence.
Research suggests that when correcting the skin topically, the best approach is a neutral, consistent and simple skin care routine to ensure it is a habit we can easily maintain.
The skin works to change and regulate over a 6-12 week period, with results typically visible by six months. Even when we are managing the environmental impact on our skin and the body’s influence, we sometimes need a little extra help. Below is the SHS regimen we recommend to help you reduce the appearance of your pigmentation.
The Routine
MORNING - 1 Step
1-2 pea size amounts, warmed up in your fingertips applied evenly over the entire face, neck and décolletage. Great as a makeup primer.
We use our RP Moisturiser in this routine for its hydrating support, minimal sweat factor, ability to reflect harmful UVA and UVB rays through Zinc oxide and Titanium oxide. This is particularly important for melasma-prone skin, as reflecting harmful rays and heat helps to reduce the overproduction of pigment within the skin.
This moisturiser is lightweight and non-comedogenic.
EVENING - 3 steps
1x pea size amount, lather with a small amount of water on your fingertips, massage into face, neck and décolletage. Rinse.
An enriching combination of Vitamin B and Vitamin E, helps to soothe the skin and gently remove daily impurities.
Strictly pea size amount onto fingertips and then evenly dispersed over face. Pat a small amount under your eye as your eye serum. Repeat step for your neck and décolletage if desired.
The REM serum is your powerhouse to your skin cells. Vitamins A and B work to repair and regulate the daily damage to your skin while you sleep at night. Vitamin B is a powerful anti-inflammatory that helps to reduce reddened and inflamed skin.
BC Moisturiser
1-2 pea size amounts, warmed up in your fingertips applied evenly over the entire face, neck and décolletage.
Packed full of peptides, our BC Moisturiser promotes collagen production and hydrates with its unique combination of hyaluronic acid, oatmeal, and peptides?
Lightweight and non-comedogenic.
Treatments
Here we recommend active skin treatments you can undertake to treat pigmentation.
SKIN NEEDLING
Helps to break up pigmentation sitting deep in the skin.
This is a treatment that is safe in most skin types and has the added benefit of assisting in maintaining your skin’s natural collagen. Collagen production treatments are key in order to stimulate constant renewal as we get older.
Medical-grade skin needling is performed by registered nurses or medical practitioners. A skin assessment is essential prior to undergoing any skin treatment. Skin Needling is one of the go-to treatments to have due to advancements in research and technology.
LASER
Laser treatment can be extremely effective in treating sun damage induced pigmentation (i.e. sun spots/freckles).
Medical grade lasers can help to stimulate collagen and promote firming of the skin. The PicoWay device by Candela in particular shows great skin tightening and firming after a single treatment, so you don’t have to spend a lot of money to see results.
LED therapy is another great treatment with minimal down time that helps to promote an instant glow in the skin.
Laser treatment is not recommended for melasma pigmentation or Fitzpatrick skin types 4 and above.
A skin check by a Specialist Skin Cancer doctor or dermatologist is essential prior to undergoing any removal of pigmentation.
CHEMICAL PEELS
Caution should be exercised when treating pigmentation with chemical peels, but under the right professional advice, great results can be achieved.
Chemical peels help to promote collagen production and the Cosmelan Peel in particular has been shown to deliver great results, but they are generally not our first treatment option due to technological advancements of other treatments, such as Skin Needling.
A thorough consultation is required prior to undergoing this peel.
MICRODERMABRASION
Is a great surface treatment to encourage cellular renewal of the skin’s surface. This will help to lighten and brighten the skin complexion over a period of time.
Utilising this treatment with your active cosmeceuticals can assist in maintaining your overall skin health.
It is important to review your skin every step of the way and make an assessment as to whether you feel your skin care and skin treatments are working for you.
Sometimes we need something a little more and it is at this point around 6-12 months of trying active cosmeceuticals and medical grade skin treatments that we recommend you speak with your GP or Nurse Practitioner for referral to the ultimate skin specialists, a dermatologist.
